Brittany Vose, whose father John died of pancreatic cancer when she was 5 years old, will once again host the Pancreatic Cancer Research 18-hole Stroll at the Travelers Championship Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Vose, 21, of Cromwell, began the event in 2009 when she was in eighth grade and raised $20,000 that year. Her dad was diagnosed nine days after his daughter’s fifth birthday in 2000 and died three weeks later at age 44. Vose, named an honorary co-chair of the Travelers Championship this year, has raised $355,000 for pancreatic cancer research. … Dunkin’ Donuts Park is the best Double A ballpark in the country. The home of the Yard Goats won a bracketed online competition at ballparkdigest.com in which 178,000 fans voted on their favorite ballparks in a three-week span.ă
David Ortiz’s No. 34 will be retired at Fenway Park Friday night in a pregame ceremony before the Red Sox play the Los Angeles Angels but there will be another ceremony earlier in the day at Logan Airport honoring the Red Sox slugger. Gate C34 in the JetBlue’s Terminal C will be designated as Ortiz’s gate, complete with Red Sox and Ortiz memorabilia, including official Fenway Park seats. … Suffolk Downs racetrack will host three weekends of live thoroughbred racing July 8-9, Aug. 5-6 and Sept. 2-3. The track has been sold to a development company, which eventually plans to build a community with shops, restaurants and housing on the site. That is not happening right away, however, as Suffolk Downs has leased the track back for racing festivals this year and next year. … Yankees prospect Gleyber Torres was rising in the system quickly but he will not be making his debut in New York this season. He needs Tommy John surgery on non-throwing elbow. He was injured Saturday in a Triple A game.
Eric Blake of West Hartford finished in the top three once again at the Mount Washington 7.6-mile road race Saturday, hitting the finish line at the top of the Northeast’s highest peak in third in 1:01:35. Blake, 38, is a three-time winner and was inducted into the road race’s hall of fame in 2015. The Central Connecticut cross country and track coach finished second last year in 59:49 and last won the race in 2013. Blake has had a remarkable run at Mount Washington, finishing in the top three every year since 2005 except 2011 (he was injured and finished ninth) and 2015 (when he didn’t run because of an injury). Drew Best, a Manchester native who now lives in Amherst, Mass., finished sixth in Saturday’s race in 1:08:35. … UNLV’s new athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois is trying to get the complete college experience by living in a dorm for six weeks.
